Despite the growing recognition of 3D models as essential digital heritage assets, documentation practices remain inconsistent. Foundational frameworks such as the London Charter (2009) and the Seville Principles (2017) highlight the importance of transparency and authenticity, yet practical implementation through metadata and paradata is still fragmented.
The DFG 3D-viewer project has taken significant steps toward addressing these issues, organising earlier workshops on metadata schemas (Mainz, 2022), core schema development (Munich, 2023), and standardisation challenges (Bielefeld, 2025). Now, we continue this ongoing discussion with the fourth edition, which will take place as part of CHNT30 in Vienna — bringing together experts and practitioners to advance the dialogue on standardising metadata for 3D models of cultural heritage.
November 4, 2025 | 14:40 – 17:00 CET | Hybird | CHNT30 Location is Ahnensaal in the Building of the Bundesdenkmalamt – Federal Monuments Authority Austria, entrance form Hofburg B, 1010 Vienna, Austria. Event will be in hybrid format (on-site + online). The session combines short lightning talks, focused discussions, and a collaborative breakout activity on a shared Miro board.
Key discussion topics include: • Web interoperability of 3D models; • Core metadata schema development; • Use-case-specific documentation recommendations; • Mapping existing 3D content standards; • Standardized terminology and controlled vocabularies.
